There Is No AI Content Penalty. Here's What Actually Ranks

Every month, roughly 970 agencies turn the same three news stories into a LinkedIn post saying "this changes everything, book a call". It almost never changes anything. So here's the news, and here's what it actually means for you.

Hi, I'm Nikki Pilkington. My site is https://nikki-pilkington.com/ and in this episode of "SEO F**king What", I'm trying something new — a monthly news roundup. Three stories: what happened, what the LinkedIn gurus say it means, and what it actually means for a business with fewer than 10 staff and a website that gets 400 visits a month. Most months the honest answer will be "this changes fuck all for you, carry on", and I'd rather tell you that than invent a crisis.

Here's what I'm covering: — Ahrefs studied 331,000 pages to find out if Google hates AI content, and what they actually found (54.7% of top-ranking pages are under 20% AI) — Why there is no AI penalty, and why the two camps screaming about this study are both wrong in exactly the same way — Why heavily AI-generated pages really do perform worse, and why it has nothing whatsoever to do with the tool — The rule underneath all of it: you can't judge writing about your industry unless you already know your industry — Why you should not run your own website through an AI detector this week (I've been flagged as a robot, and I can promise you I'm not) — Search Console now reports on your social posts — what it genuinely is, and why "the dawn of social SEO" is nonsense — Why the four platforms Google picked are completely arse about face for a B2B service business — AI Overviews on 43% of searches, why there's no such thing as separate "AI SEO", and why your traffic can drop while your visibility improves

I also give you a proper piece of homework. Three jobs, 20 minutes total. Not the "might do that one day" kind — the actual do-it-this-week kind, including the cheapest AI visibility tracking on Earth.

If you know someone who's about to panic-rewrite forty pages because a detector gave them a scary number, send them this. It'll save them a fortnight.

Get found. Make money. Stop stressing. And if anybody tries to sell you an AI detector this month, tell them Nikki said no.

Nikki AI:

AI overviews now show up on 43% of Google searches.

Nikki AI:

A year ago, it was 15%.

Nikki AI:

instead of setting fire to a monthly retainer.

Nikki AI:

This one's a bit different because I'm trying something new.

Nikki AI:

Once a month, I'm gonna try and do a kind of news episode 'cause every

Nikki AI:

month, there's a bunch of SEO news, and every month, roughly 970 agencies

Nikki AI:

turn that news into a LinkedIn post saying, This changes everything.

Nikki AI:

Book a call." But it doesn't change everything.

Nikki AI:

It pretty much never changes anything.

Nikki AI:

But you don't know that because the only people telling you about

Nikki AI:

it want to sell you something.

Nikki AI:

The problem is there's not enough meat in most of those stories to make

Nikki AI:

even a 10-minute podcast episode.

Nikki AI:

So here we are with my John Craven's Newsround kind of roundup of a few things

Nikki AI:

that have happened recently and how they affect you as a small business owner.

Nikki AI:

three stories.

Nikki AI:

What happened, what the LinkedIn gurus say it means, and what it actually means

Nikki AI:

for a business with fewer than 10 staff and a website that gets 400 visits a month

Nikki AI:

Nell, is it?

Nikki AI:

And most months, the honest answer will be this changes fuck all for you.

Nikki AI:

Carry on.

Nikki AI:

And I'd rather tell you that than invent a crisis.

Nikki AI:

Let's go.

Nikki AI:

Story one, Ahrefs studied 331,000 pages to see if Google hates AI content.

Nikki AI:

They published a big study at the end of July.

Nikki AI:

It's probably the most useful thing anyone's put out in months,

Nikki AI:

which is exactly why it's about to get misrepresented by everybody.

Nikki AI:

So they pulled a million pages from the top 10 results across

Nikki AI:

100,000 searches in June.

Nikki AI:

About 150,000 of those million pages had enough text on them to

Nikki AI:

run through an AI detector, which is a whole other story in itself,

Nikki AI:

but we're not gonna go into it now.

Nikki AI:

What they found was that just over half, so 54.7%, of the top ranking

Nikki AI:

pages had less than 20% of AI content.

Nikki AI:

Pages with under half AI content accounted for about 82.2% of the top three rankings.

Nikki AI:

But fully AI-generated pages do rank.

Nikki AI:

5.3% of top-ranking pages were 100% AI-generated.

Nikki AI:

And when it comes to indexing, which let's not forget is not ranking, it's just

Nikki AI:

being included in the Google index, low-AI content pages got indexed about 49% of the

Nikki AI:

time, and very high-AI content about 40%.

Nikki AI:

So what's gonna happen to this study?

Nikki AI:

We're gonna have camp one, the stop being a dinosaur lot.

Nikki AI:

They'll scream that Google doesn't penalize AI content, so crack on, spin

Nikki AI:

up 400 blog posts, nobody's checking.

Nikki AI:

And then you'll have camp two, the doom merchants.

Nikki AI:

They'll scream that AI content ranks worse and gets indexed

Nikki AI:

less, so buy their human-written content package at £350 a post.

Nikki AI:

They're both wrong, and they're both wrong in the same way.

Nikki AI:

They're reading a correlation and calling it a rule because what the study actually

Nikki AI:

tells you is this: Google is not sitting there with a machine that goes, "Beep,

Nikki AI:

this was written by a robot. Into the bin with you." There is no AI penalty.

Nikki AI:

That's over.

Nikki AI:

Stop worrying about it.

Nikki AI:

But heavily AI-generated pages do perform worse on average,

Nikki AI:

but it's not because they're AI.

Nikki AI:

It's because of what they are.

Nikki AI:

Think about who produces a page that's 100% AI with no human touching it.

Nikki AI:

Someone doing volume, someone who doesn't know the subject, someone who

Nikki AI:

typed, "Write me a 1,500-word blog post about commercial insurance,"

Nikki AI:

and hit publish without reading it.

Nikki AI:

That content is shit for reasons that have nothing to do with the tool that made it.

Nikki AI:

And the ones in the 5.3% that do rank, well, somebody who knew what

Nikki AI:

they were talking about probably looked at the output and fixed

Nikki AI:

it, and that's the difference.

Nikki AI:

Which brings me back to the thing that I will keep banging on about until I'm dead.

Nikki AI:

You cannot judge writing about your industry unless you

Nikki AI:

already know your industry.

Nikki AI:

you can't tell whether a model has given you something useful or

Nikki AI:

something plausible-sounding and wrong unless you already know the answer.

Nikki AI:

If you're a chartered surveyor using AI to draft something on party wall agreements,

Nikki AI:

you'll spot the bollocks in four seconds because you've been doing it for 20 years.

Nikki AI:

Fix it, publish it, fine.

Nikki AI:

If you're that same surveyor using AI to draft something about, let's

Nikki AI:

say, SEO, you've got no idea whether it's right, and that's how you end up

Nikki AI:

publishing bollocks with your name on it.

Nikki AI:

There's one practical thing about this one.

Nikki AI:

Ahrefs used their own AI detector for this, and they said outright

Nikki AI:

that it has limitations and it isn't exactly what Google's doing.

Nikki AI:

So don't go and run your own website through an AI detector this week.

Nikki AI:

They're unreliable.

Nikki AI:

They flag human writing as AI constantly.

Nikki AI:

I have my own stuff flagged as robot written, and I can promise

Nikki AI:

you I am extremely fucking human.

Nikki AI:

Run your site through a detector, get a scary number, rewrite 40 pages in a

Nikki AI:

panic, and you've wasted a fortnight and probably made your website worse

Nikki AI:

Let's move on to story two.

Nikki AI:

Search Console now reports on your social posts, and it's live for everyone.

Nikki AI:

Google announced this on the 7th of July, and it's been trickling out since.

Nikki AI:

As of the 29th, it's live globally, so no more waiting.

Nikki AI:

You connect your Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, never X, or YouTube account

Nikki AI:

to Search Console, and you can see how those posts perform in Google Search

Nikki AI:

and in Discover and Google News.

Nikki AI:

You can see clicks, impressions, and the search terms bringing

Nikki AI:

people to your posts.

Nikki AI:

Google's also published a guide on reading the data.

Nikki AI:

There's one kind of interesting bit on this one.

Nikki AI:

Until now, every Search Console property has needed you to

Nikki AI:

prove that you own the domain.

Nikki AI:

This one doesn't.

Nikki AI:

You can connect an account.

Nikki AI:

So if your whole business lives on Instagram and you've never bought a

Nikki AI:

domain, which kind of raises the point of why the fuck are you listening to this?

Nikki AI:

But hey, hey.

Nikki AI:

You can now get real Google search data.

Nikki AI:

And that tells you who Google built it for.

Nikki AI:

They built it for creators.

Nikki AI:

They didn't build it for website owners.

Nikki AI:

And the reaction about it has been, "Oh my God, slightly deranged." " It's

Nikki AI:

the dawn of social SEO, a new era for search." Mate, it's a report.

Nikki AI:

Your social posts have been showing up in Google results If you search

Nikki AI:

a business name, you get their Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn.

Nikki AI:

That's been happening forever because Google understands your business as an

Nikki AI:

entity, a thing that exists in the world, with your website and your profiles

Nikki AI:

all connected together in its head.

Nikki AI:

The posts were already there.

Nikki AI:

The connection was already there.

Nikki AI:

Google's just given you a dashboard.

Nikki AI:

And here's my prediction.

Nikki AI:

Give people a scoreboard and some of them start playing to it.

Nikki AI:

We're about to get a wave of social posts written for Google instead

Nikki AI:

of for the humans scrolling past.

Nikki AI:

We've already got keyword-stuffed captions.

Nikki AI:

They're gonna get worse.

Nikki AI:

Posts that read like a meta description.

Nikki AI:

Google's already published a guide on optimizing social content for

Nikki AI:

search, which is a hell of a fast turnaround on that particular prophecy.

Nikki AI:

One last thing on this one, and it's why I'm not more excited.

Nikki AI:

The four platforms are Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube.

Nikki AI:

No LinkedIn, no Facebook.

Nikki AI:

For a B2B service business, that list is completely arse about face.

Nikki AI:

LinkedIn is probably where nearly all your social effort goes, and it's not on it.

Nikki AI:

Google says the four are a starting point and it might grow.

Nikki AI:

So the businesses most likely to get something useful out of this

Nikki AI:

are the ones who can't have it yet.

Nikki AI:

Make of that what you will

Nikki AI:

Story three, 43%.

Nikki AI:

Back to the number that was at the top of the episode.

Nikki AI:

Similar web data, which was reported by TechCrunch on the 27th of

Nikki AI:

July, says that AI overviews now appear on 43% of Google searches.

Nikki AI:

A year ago, that was 15%.

Nikki AI:

Their take is that this stopped being a layer on top of search and

Nikki AI:

became part of the search journey.

Nikki AI:

Google drops you into an AI overview.

Nikki AI:

You carry on into AI mode from there, asking questions conversationally.

Nikki AI:

I did an episode a while back about ranking number one being useless.

Nikki AI:

that argument has aged frighteningly well, and it needs updating.

Nikki AI:

It's not just about whether position one earns a click anymore.

Nikki AI:

On nearly half of searches, there's a summary sitting above

Nikki AI:

everything, answering the question before anyone reaches the results.

Nikki AI:

But don't let anyone use this number to sell you something, because

Nikki AI:

that's mostly what's gonna happen.

Nikki AI:

Some chancer is gonna put 43% in a slide deck and flog you an AI visibility

Nikki AI:

retainer off the back of it What it means for you is that to get cited in

Nikki AI:

an AI overview, you have to be in the index and ranking, and the work is the

Nikki AI:

work you were already meant to be doing.

Nikki AI:

There's no separate AI SEO.

Nikki AI:

But what it does mean is that if you measure success by traffic alone,

Nikki AI:

your numbers will look worse, even when your visibility improves.

Nikki AI:

That's not you failing.

Nikki AI:

That's the search results changing shape underneath you.

Nikki AI:

So that's the news.

Nikki AI:

Now the actual to-do list.

Nikki AI:

Three things, 20 minutes total.

Nikki AI:

Stay with me.

Nikki AI:

So your homework.

Nikki AI:

One, connect your social accounts to Search Console.

Nikki AI:

It's live for everyone now, so no excuses.

Nikki AI:

Log in, property drop-down, add property, pick whichever of the four you use.

Nikki AI:

Five minutes.

Nikki AI:

Then leave it.

Nikki AI:

Data takes a few days to appear.

Nikki AI:

So if you're staring at an empty chart tomorrow and conclude

Nikki AI:

that Google hates you, don't.

Nikki AI:

When it does arrive, look at one thing, the search terms

Nikki AI:

bringing people to your posts.

Nikki AI:

Not the volume, the terms.

Nikki AI:

If people are finding your Instagram through searches you

Nikki AI:

never expected, that's content ideas for your actual website.

Nikki AI:

Two, take one page you drafted with AI and do the parts you skipped.

Nikki AI:

Just one, not all of them.

Nikki AI:

Your most important service page or your most recent blog post.

Nikki AI:

Read it properly, out loud if you can.

Nikki AI:

Ask one question all the way through.

Nikki AI:

What do I know about this that the LLM or the chat didn't?

Nikki AI:

The specific client situation, the thing that always goes wrong on this type of

Nikki AI:

job, the price range nobody publishes, the bit customers always get confused about.

Nikki AI:

Go back, put that in, and cut out anything that could have been written

Nikki AI:

about any business in your sector.

Nikki AI:

That's the difference between AI content that ranks and AI content that doesn't.

Nikki AI:

It's not the tool.

Nikki AI:

It's whether somebody who knows the subject went in afterwards.

Nikki AI:

Three, search your top three money terms and look at what's above the results.

Nikki AI:

Open an incognito window, type in the three searches you most

Nikki AI:

want to be found for, and look at the screen before you scroll.

Nikki AI:

Is there an AI overview?

Nikki AI:

Yes or no?

Nikki AI:

Are you cited in it?

Nikki AI:

Yes or no?

Nikki AI:

Write it down.

Nikki AI:

That's your baseline.

Nikki AI:

Do it again in three months.

Nikki AI:

Cheapest AI visibility tracking on Earth, and roughly £900 a month less than the

Nikki AI:

tools being sold to you right now And that's your lot for the first news one.

Nikki AI:

Tell me if you want more of these because if nobody likes it, I'll happily go back

Nikki AI:

to shouting about meta descriptions.

Nikki AI:

Make sure you're following SEO Fucking What in whichever app you're listening

Nikki AI:

About the Podcast

SEO F**king What - Get Found on Google and make money from your website with practical SEO tips
SEO advice that cuts through the crap and doesn't treat you like an idiot
This podcast exists because you deserve better than the SEO bollocks currently being sold to you.

Every week, I'll give you 10-15 minutes of straight talk about SEO. Practical advice that actually works for B2B websites trying to get found on Google/search and make money. The kind of stuff that's been proven over years, not dreamed up last Tuesday by some LinkedIn tosspot.

Real SEO from someone who's been doing this since dial-up was considered fast. I'll tell you what works, what's complete nonsense, and which tactics will get your website buried faster than you can say "guaranteed first page rankings."

I'm calling out the bullshitters. The agencies promising the world and delivering fuck all. The LinkedIn gooroos flogging courses about things that don't actually exist. The AI SEO "hacks" destroying perfectly good websites. The expensive tools you don't need. The "experts" who learned SEO from a YouTube video three months ago. If someone's talking bollocks about SEO, you'll hear about it here.

More importantly, I'm telling you what to do instead. Every rant comes with actual, practical steps you can take. Real actions that get results, not theory that sounds clever but does bugger all for your rankings. "Do this, then do that, and you'll see movement." That's it. That's the format.

You're running a B2B business or managing a B2B website. You've probably been burned by an SEO agency before. Maybe they took your money and delivered a fancy report full of words that meant absolutely nothing. Or they promised first page rankings and disappeared after six months of bugger all results.

You're sick of reading blog posts that say nothing in 2000 words. You're tired of SEO "tips" that are either blindingly obvious or completely bizarre. You want someone to cut through the crap and tell you what actually matters for your business, not what works for some massive ecommerce site with a budget the size of a small country.

You don't need a PhD in technical SEO. You need to know what's worth your time and what's complete bollocks. You need to know which tactics will actually bring in leads and which ones are just expensive ways to make yourself feel busy. That's what I'm here for.

This isn't some sanitised, corporate-approved SEO podcast where everyone's lovely and we pretend all tactics are equally valid. They're not. Some are brilliant. Most are pointless. And some will actively fuck up your website while the "expert" who recommended them is off selling the same dodgy advice to the next poor sod.

I swear. A lot. If that bothers you, there are plenty of other podcasts out there with hosts who never offend anyone. Go find them. They're very nice. They're also very boring.

This also isn't a podcast that assumes you're stupid. You're not. You're just busy running a business and don't have time to decode the latest algorithm update or work out which SEO tactic is legitimate and which one's complete fantasy.

Fifteen minutes. One topic. I'll tell you what's pissing me off this week in the SEO industry, why it matters to your website, and what you should actually do about it. Then I'm done. You can get back to running your business.

New episodes drop weekly, because the SEO industry creates fresh bullshit faster than I can rant about it. Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts so you don't miss the next time some gooroo invents a new problem to sell you the solution to.

Welcome to SEO F**king What? Let's fix your website.
